The Boys and Girls Club has existed in Canada for more than 100 years but in Kingston for only 10.
The local club's home is the former Robert Meek School on Bagot Street. It was an old school, poorly insulated. Much needs to be done to fix it up. Last year, it cost $45,000 in utilities.
Most of the windows will need to be replaced soon. The parking lot needs paving; the games room needs fixing and a new boiler is needed.
But the Boys and Girls Club Campaign isn't raising money for these repairs. We're raising money for the club's after-school programs to keep hundreds of children busy. We're also raising money for the club's summer camps.
Currently, the club helps 1,519 children and youth between the ages of four and 18. That's almost 50 per cent more than last year, which means the demand for the club's programs and services has grown.
A family's inability to pay won't stand in the way of a child going to the club. Last year, the club provided $23,075 in subsidies. Membership fees are $25 per person per year. Summer camp costs $70 a week.
Last year, the Kinsmen Club donated $21,000, over three years, to help send needy children to our summer camps.
We have 627 volunteers contributing 3,856 hours to help our children.
If you'd like a tour of the club, please call me or Harold Parsons, executive director of the club.

Inger Sparring of the Fancy That/ The Round Stone Group is one of our major donors. In fact, she was the first donor to this year's campaign. She and her company gave $1,000.
"I donate because it's important to help the children when they need help," she said.

Our photo seminars are almost full. The first session, for beginning and intermediate levels, will be held Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m.
The second session, for intermediate and advanced levels, will be held a week from tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. Both sessions will be at the Kingston-Frontenac Public Library at 130 Johnson St.
The seminars are co-sponsored by The Whig-Standard and Camera Kingston. The cost is $20 each and all the money will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club. We're also sponsoring a photo contest in the near future. Prizes will total $1,000.
For more information or registration, please call Camera Kingston at 549-3747 or 384-3747.
I'd like to thank the staff of Camera Kingston - particularly co-owner Don Sleeth - for answering all the inquiries and registrations. Now you know why we only do these seminars once every few years.
